Shea Butter and Cocoa Butter: How Our Butters Benefit Your Skin

Shea Butter and Cocoa Butter: How Our Butters Benefit Your Skin

Butters are some of the richest ingredients in body care. They can give a product a creamy texture, help seal in moisture, and leave skin feeling soft and comfortable. At Aquinas Soap Company, we use two plant-based butters across our products: shea butter and cocoa butter.

They are not interchangeable, and they are not the same as carrier oils. Each butter brings its own texture and personality to soaps, bath products, balms, lip care, and conditioning bars.

What makes a butter different from an oil?

Plant butters are generally solid or semi-solid at room temperature, while carrier oils are liquid. When applied to the skin, butters melt and create a rich, cushiony feel. They can also help reduce moisture loss by leaving a protective layer on the skin’s surface.

That does not mean a butter works better for every person or every skin type. The best choice depends on the complete formula, your preferences, and how your skin responds.

Shea butter

Shea butter comes from the nut of the shea tree. In our product range, it appears in many of our soaps, bath bombs, deodorants, balms, conditioning products, and other body-care formulas.

How shea butter feels on skin

Shea butter is known for its rich, creamy feel. It can help leave skin feeling softer and more comfortable, especially in formulas designed for cleansing, bathing, or moisturizing. In a bar of soap, it contributes to a conditioning after-feel. In a balm or deodorant, it can add richness and help the product glide smoothly.

Why we use it

  • It adds a creamy, nourishing feel to a formula.
  • It helps skin feel soft after cleansing or bathing.
  • It can help slow moisture loss from the skin’s surface.
  • It adds body and richness to balms, bars, and conditioning products.

Cocoa butter

Cocoa butter comes from the cocoa bean. It is naturally firm at room temperature and has a smooth, rich texture. We use it in products such as lip care, nail balm, and conditioning formulas.

How cocoa butter feels on skin

Cocoa butter creates a protective, cushiony feel and helps leave dry-feeling areas feeling smoother. Its firmness also makes it useful when a product needs more structure, such as a lip balm or solid care product.

Why we use it

  • It gives balms and solid products a smooth, substantial texture.
  • It helps soften the feel of dry lips, hands, and other areas that need extra comfort.
  • It contributes to a protective layer that helps reduce moisture loss.
  • It adds richness without needing a complicated routine.

Shea butter vs. cocoa butter

Both butters can help skin feel softer and more protected, but they behave differently in a formula. Shea butter is typically softer and creamier, while cocoa butter is firmer and more structured. A formula may use one or both depending on the desired texture, glide, and finish.

In simple terms, shea butter brings a soft, buttery richness, while cocoa butter brings firmness and a smooth protective feel. Neither one is automatically “better.” They simply do different jobs.

How our butters work with other ingredients

Butters are only part of a finished formula. Our products may also include carrier oils such as olive, coconut, sweet almond, jojoba, castor, or sunflower oil. These liquid oils can add glide, lather, softness, or conditioning qualities.

Beeswax can help give a balm structure, while essential oils and fragrance ingredients contribute scent. Each ingredient has a different role, and the full ingredient list is always the best way to understand a specific product.

Choosing a butter-rich product

Choose a butter-rich formula when you enjoy a more nourishing, cushiony feel or when your skin feels like it needs extra comfort after cleansing or bathing. A soap or bath product with butter can make a lovely everyday ritual, while a balm or lip product can be useful for targeted areas that feel dry.

If you have a known allergy or sensitivity, review the full ingredient list before use and patch test a new product on a small area. Stop using any product that causes discomfort, redness, itching, or irritation.

At Aquinas Soap Company, we use shea butter and cocoa butter thoughtfully, pairing them with complementary oils and ingredients to create products that feel good to use. Rich care does not have to mean a complicated routine. Sometimes it starts with one well-made bar, balm, or conditioning product.
